Inbound Marketing Experts Linked In Poll Question #1 Results

Linked In Poll Suggests There Are Many Companies That Don't Appreciate The Value That Analytics Data Provides

This Linked In Poll suggests that there is considerable misunderstanding on the value of website analytics. While the comments suggest that those who do understand the value reference the data frequently, a full 40% either have no understanding or only refer to the data monthly. Since data collectd by website analytics programs gives quantitative, unbiased evaluation of what is and what isn't generating visitor activity on your website, at IME we believe this data to be of high value in relation to:

  1. Determining future content development;
  2. Arrest actions that aren't achieving the desired results;
  3. Deeper understanding of prospect audience needs;
  4. Evaluating which landing pages and calls to action are working best at lead generation;

...to identify just some of the information value. Website analytics allow for critical analysis of real data, not just a "gut feeling" of what initiatives have value relative to increasing traffic or internet lead generation.

We want to make clear that the data of this poll is not what we consider a valid sampling by any measure. The participants are more internet savvy generally, and so we believe the results are skewed heavily towards a better understanding and use of website analytics than would be found in a broader general business audience survey.

Here's another perspective. It's not to dissuade you away from using web analytics but it does offer a perspective that should be considered. http://www.theurbn.com/2011/10/what-is-influence-in-the-world-of-social-media/

Great addition Ralph, thank you. While I think that what you wrote in the UT post is relevant, and I agree with much of what you offer, at IME our focus is on business growth and we use analytics for evaluating a variety of 'influences', but most importantly, closed loop analytics provide a clear indication of ROI. From the perspective of a business that is growing, being able to assess what actions are driving results allows for focused activity and planning around previous actions that have added value in the form of business growth. While we do look at things like reach and influence, what really matters to our clients is more traffic, more leads, and more business and analytics are a powerful tool that help us generate those results. Thoughts?

Andy, I inderstand and agree. Analytics are absolutely necessary in order to drive business forward. It just seems to me that in the social spaces more and more engagement is following traditional advertising edicts. Understanding the customer and getting to know them and eventually knowing that what the business has to offer is what they need is critical to ROI. Ask this; will the customer endorse the business? or is it a one time hit? I am just reading "The Ultimate Question" by Fred Reichheld who has taken analytics, in my mind, in the right direction. Would love to discuss this further.
