Looking at the results of the most recently closed Linked In poll may lead some to wonder if content for the web is really all that important...it is! Don't forget that the audience of participants is limited to those who are on Linked In and we'd argue that this skews results dramatically. Based on the conversations that we have with business leaders more generally, content is an overlooked and misunderstood element of their web development plan. All of that said, there were still over 50% of respondents who selected 1-2 changes or additions monthly OR LESS as their answer. If these results were put out to a more general audience we suspect that the group representing infrequent change would be dramatically higher.
Why is content such a critical element of inbound marketing? Simply put, more content offers greater opportunity for your target audience to find you. If this isn't important to your company then you don't need to be concerned. We'd argue that in todays increasingly internet oriented community you should...BE CONCERNED!
This Linked In Poll suggests that there is considerable misunderstanding on the value of website analytics. While the comments suggest that those who do understand the value reference the data frequently, a full 40% either have no understanding or only refer to the data monthly. Since data collectd by website analytics programs gives quantitative, unbiased evaluation of what is and what isn't generating visitor activity on your website, at IME we believe this data to be of high value in relation to:
...to identify just some of the information value. Website analytics allow for critical analysis of real data, not just a "gut feeling" of what initiatives have value relative to increasing traffic or internet lead generation.
We want to make clear that the data of this poll is not what we consider a valid sampling by any measure. The participants are more internet savvy generally, and so we believe the results are skewed heavily towards a better understanding and use of website analytics than would be found in a broader general business audience survey.
